The Axe

The first axes are known from the Mesolithic period (ca. 6000 B.C.).  The axe was often used to cut Wood, but also as a weapon. Axes were also used in religious purposes. In Crete the doubel axe had a special significance and was used by women priests in religious ceremonies.
In the Roman fasces, the axe symbolised the authority to execute and were often used as symbols for Fascist Italy under Mussolini.
